Opportunities in Worship & Music
Our approach to our worship gatherings is that everyone is invited and encouraged to participate actively. The congregation is not our audience; God is our audience and our worship is offered and directed first and foremost to Him. Accordingly, we believe strongly in the importance of choirs and a full platform of worship leaders. There are opportunities for singers, instrumentalists and for technical operators.Below is a listing of our worship ministries with brief descriptions. Individuals who are interested in being a part of one or more of the opportunities listed below should contact Bret Woodall at 757-499-0557.
Sanctuary Choir –This choir primarily sings in our 8:30 worship service (occasionally sharing anthems in the 11:00 service as well). We sing mostly hymns in this worship service but the choir sings anthems in a variety of styles of music with either piano, orchestra/band, praise band of recorded accompaniments. No audition is required to join this choir, we only ask for you to have a heart for worship and to make a commitment to faithfully participate in rehearsals and services.
Worship Choir -This choir primarily sings in our 11:00 worship service assisting in leading the congregation as we worship in song. We sing mostly contemporary worship songs or modern arrangements of classic hymns. No audition is required to join this choir. We only ask for you to have a heart for worship and to make a commitment to faithfully participate in rehearsals and services.
Christmas Choir - This choir works from late August through December preparing special worship programs for thebAdvent and Christmas season. Although made up mostly of the Sanctuary Choir and Worship Choir, we always have many who want to join in singing these special programs during this time of the year. Again, no audition is required to join this choir, we only ask for you to have a heart for worship and a willingness to faithfully attend rehearsals and presentations during these months.
Worship Band - This band is made of singers and instrumentalists who lead in worship during our 11:00 service. This group is our only group that is not open to everyone and requires an interview and audition to join. We have longer rehearsals and often act as the rhythm section for the “orchestra” that periodically accompanies one of our various choirs.
Orchestra -This instrumental ministry is not a traditional “orchestra” per se. It is more of a hybrid between wind band, orchestra and praise band. This group plays during all of our 8:30 services and also frequently acts as the instrumental accompaniment for our choirs. Again, no audition is required to join this group, we do ask that you have a heart for worship, a reasonable ability on your instrument and a commitment to attend rehearsals and be prepared on your music.
Pathway Ringers -Our bell choir regularly prepares music for use in our worship services, occasionally preparing full concerts for special meetings or other times of worship. Experience is preferred but not required, and so, once again, no audition is required to join this ensemble. A love of bells and a willingness to faithfully attend rehearsals is, once again, required.
JOY Singers -Our senior adult choir prepares music which we regularly share in local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. This choir is open to all adults over the age of 50 (although we have had several members much younger than that!). We also prepare programs which we periodically share in our JOY Seeker dinners or other special meeting times. We rehearse on Tuesday mornings most every week.
Children’s Choirs & Alpha Bells -These choirs are open to children in 1st to 6th grade. They meet each Wednesday evening (during the school year) and prepare songs and pieces which they share in worship services and at special programs twice a year.
Cherub Choir & Preschool Choir - These choir are open to 3 year olds (Cherub Choir) and to 4 year old, 5 year old and kindergarten children. They meet each Wednesday evening (during the school year) and prepare songs which they share in special programs twice a year.
Sound Engineers -This vital ministry is always in need of more willing, faithful workers with an interest in skillfully mixing as they run the Sanctuary sound board for worship services and rehearsals. A basic knowledge of sound boards and a strong, musical ear is preferred but not mandatory. What is mandatory is an appreciation for the importance of this ministry, a teachable spirit and a commitment to serve by faithfully attending training times, rehearsals and services as scheduled.
Media Operators - This vital ministry is also in need of more willing, faithful servants with an interest in creating and running our slides (and occasional videos) for our worship services. No previous experience is required but a commitment and teachable spirit is necessary to serve in this important area.
