Associate Pastor, Christian Education

I was born, attended public school and graduated from college all in the state of North Carolina, but have lived most of the years of my adult life in Virginia.  I grew up, along with my three sisters,  in a Christian home and through the guidance of two very loving parents came to know and understand who Jesus was and why He died for me.  I publicly affirmed my trust in Christ as Savior when I joined the church around the age of twelve.  However, it wasn’t until the summer following my senior year of high school that I really came to terms with the issue of totally surrendering my life to Christ as Lord.  It was in the dark stillness of my bedroom on one of those summer nights that I quietly committed my life to serving God, wherever He chose to lead me.   I attended Elon University, graduating in 1973 with a BA in history, and later received a master's degree in religious education from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky (1980). Through the years God has led me to serve Him in a variety of capacities, among them the following:  being a public high school and middle school teacher for seven years and serving as a volunteer youth worker in the church , both in Winchester, Virginia; working in a church as part-time youth minister while at seminary; and serving as a staff minister in the local church, first as Youth Minister for six years in Bel Air, Maryland, then as Youth Minister for sixteen years here at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church, and for the last 9 years, as Minister of Christian Education, again here at Thalia Lynn.

My wife, Emily, and I have been happily married for 30+ years.  Our son and his wife Rose live in Nashville, Tennessee and our daughter and her husband Ryan currently reside in San Diego, California.  Emily and I enjoy times with family and friends, traveling to places old and new, and reading a good book.  I like to delve into family genealogy when I can find the time, am an avid Duke basketball fan, and particularly enjoy the taste of good North Carolina barbecue.

There are many Scripture passages that continue to impact my spiritual journey.  One of these is Ephesians 5:1-2, where the Apostle Paul says:  “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life full of love, just  as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”
